What does adding life to work give?

Lifework. Joyful, meaningful and impactful activities to make a living from. For most of us, the two extremes, work without life and life without work, would be unsatisfactory and unthinkable, while a thrilling and fulfilling lifework seems ideal. Work supporting life and life energizing work. In one package.

What would it look like? Big smiles and high fives. Less unhealthy stress, more balanced enjoyment. Easy by design, fun by facilitation, and challenging by choice. Serious fun in a safe and sane way. Meaningful and fulfilling. We would work for other purposes and in other ways to contribute to planetary recovery and human prosperity.

Sounds more of a dream than a vision, I know, but let’s play with the idea and look at what could take us there. For me, it starts with rethinking the concepts of value and growth. What is valuable to us as individuals and communities? Which values to live by and which to work for? Based on this, what should growth be, and how could we design work in the future?

Value is a matter of importance. To survive, we need air, food and water. To thrive, we need shelter, security, social support, a positive worldview, and optimism about the future. To flourish together, we need laws, regulations and agreements. Beyond that, it is up to each of us to figure out what is valuable, and ultimately how we will…
