What Is Right?

Two paths. The smooth and comfortable or the rough and challenging. Which would you choose? Hmm. It would depend on your experience with similar situations, previous choices, current motivation, state and mood, practical issues, etc. Most of these factors are unconscious in the moment. Your choice just has to feel right.

From a brain’s perspective, the smooth path is the default. It appears easier and safer. Which are the main concerns of your decision-making organ. What could motivate you to take the more strenuous route? Perhaps the reward behind the challenge: a beautiful sight, an endorphin-induced runners high, or some other story of a happy ending. What makes the decision right is how you think about it.

Thoughts and feelings guide us to the right decisions. They can also lead to wrong conclusions and actions. Logically and ethically. Collectively and personally. Being conscious about the process and having a methodology certainly helps us make better decisions. I already wrote about what is important and possible. This time, let us focus on what is right.

The word ‘right’ has many interpretations. As an adjective, it means ‘morally good and justified’. As an adverb, it means ‘to the most complete extent or degree’.
